What is Integrative Psychiatry?
If you're
considering a
Therapist,
Psychologist,
or Psychiatrist
in Scottsdale, AZ...
Here's an option you may consider.
Integrative Psychiatry
offers 'the best of all worlds' in Mental Healthcare.
Have you decided that you might need to "go and talk to somebody"?
Most people have never consulted with a mental health professional before they realize that their life has become uncomfortably out of balance or even unmanageable. For many of these individuals, probably owing to so many classic Hollywood therapist couch scenes, their first instinct is to seek out a psychologist, counselor, or "talk therapist".
It should be said that psychotherapy (aka "talk therapy") has built a considerable track record of success over almost a century of experience and as such isn't a bad place to start. That said, many people with life challenges may find integrative psychiatry to be a welcome solution.
So what is the difference between psychology and psychiatry? The field of psychology involves treating clients using methods such as behavioral modification, talk therapy, and mindfulness practices, whereas psychiatry (a medical field) involves the potential to take treatment a step further by potentially prescribing medication (i.e. psychiatry involves both psychotherapy and prescription of medication).
Integrative psychiatry is a relatively new branch of psychiatry that combines conventional psychiatric practices with holistic and integrative therapies, aiming to address "the whole person" and the root causes of mental health issues.
It's Still Psychiatry...
Only, A Little Different.
Medication is NOT the only Option
As decades of medical research supports, prescription medication can be a lifesaver in the right situation BUT Integrative Psychiatry does not regard prescription
medication as the only option for relief from Anxiety, Depression, and other mental health challenges.
Psychotherapy
(aka "Talk Therapy")
in the Best Setting
Clinical research has consistently demonstrated across multiple conditions that therapy has the best results when it is combined with well-selected pharmaceuticals. Psychiatry offers both of these options 'under one roof'. We offer a range of psychotherapy methods.
Getting to the Root of Challenges is Favored over Treating Symptoms.
There are many ways to feel better but to feel whole, well, connected, on purpose, and at peace for the long-term requires an approach that aims to reveal the source of symptoms.
Functional
Lab Testing
Standard "medical labs" (blood tests) sometimes miss important information that can critically affect your physical and mental health. When a deeper dive is indicated, we can look at things like nutrient levels, food sensitivities, hormones, toxin levels, underlying infections, genes (e.g. MTHFR) and the gut microbiome to identify targets for health improvement.
Medication
Management
Integrative Psychiatry does not mean "entirely avoiding medication". In some cases, carefully selected and professionally managed prescriptions can make a dramatic difference in someone's life. Our evidence-based approach works with you, to find the right medication, at a precise dose, to bring targeted relief without
uncomfortable side-effects.
Precision
Nutritional Supplementation
Some naturally-occurring compounds can have therapeutic effects on brain and body function. Precise supplementation can even complement the effects of prescriptions, reducing the need for higher doses, and possible even avoiding prescription medication altogether.
Religious & Spiritual Beliefs Welcome
A common misconception is that Faith and Psychology/Psychiatry are at odds. This is not true. In fact, at our practice, the opposite is true.
