What training informs Dr. George’s rehabilitation approach?

I'm David George. I'm the founder of Neuregen. So before Neuregen, I co-founded a medical device company which was awarded FDA's medical breakthrough device designation for the treatment of migraine — the first company to actually earn that designation. And I'd like to think that I bring that same degree of rigor and standards and clinical innovation to Neuregen. I'm clinically trained across three board certifications and specialty areas: functional neurology for rehabilitation of the brain and nervous system, family care for whole-person regenerative care, and integrative psychiatry for mental health, which is often treated as separate when it's really not. So why rehabilitation? So think of it this way. A physiatrist or a physical therapist doesn't compete with a cardiologist. Rather, the physical therapist or physiatrist picks up what was left behind, and we approach that in a similar way here in Neuregen. We ask what was left behind and what's standing in the way of recovery, and that's where we focus. So our approach is always to start with the simplest, lowest-risk options first, escalating only when your own needs or best evidence requires it. There's a lot more to this, and if you're ready to learn more, you can find more on our About page and the rest of this website. But if you're ready to talk about your own recovery, give us a call.

In my own words

Why I trained across specialties, and why rehabilitation is at the center

My home discipline is rehabilitation, not any one of the specialties I draw tools from. For more than 20 years I have practiced and taught functional neurology. Along the way I trained as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and a family nurse practitioner, certified as a brain injury specialist and a dementia care specialist, worked in electrodiagnostics and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, and trained in apheresis medicine.

I cross-trained because the people who come to us rarely have one problem. An injury to the nervous system can change mood, sleep, memory, pain and a person’s sense of safety, and those pieces tend to fall between neurology, rehabilitation, pain care and psychiatry. Training across those fields lets me see how the pieces connect. It is also why our clinical team is cross-trained.

Neuregen’s job starts where other specialties leave off. Neurology, psychiatry, immunology, endocrinology and pain medicine each diagnose and treat their piece of a complex case. The question I ask is different: across the seven systems that have to work together for recovery, what is still standing in the way, and in what order should it be addressed? That is a rehabilitation question.

Sometimes the answer is more of what your other clinicians are already doing, sequenced differently. Sometimes it means tools outside a typical specialty scope. The rule is the same either way: start with the simplest, lowest-risk step that can move things forward, and escalate only when the evidence and your progress support it.

“We don't compete with conventional medicine — we collaborate with it.”
